Shanghai Quartet has a 7-day residency at Xinghai Concert Hall
From April 3rd to 9th, the Shanghai Quartet, one of the most outstanding international chamber music groups, has a week-long residency at the Xinghai Concert Hall to celebrate the hall''''s 25th anniversary. The Shanghai Quartet will present four concerts with their most representative and influential works, together with some interactive activities.
Founded in 1983, the Shanghai Quartet has performed nearly 3,000 concerts and recorded more than thirty albums, covering Western masterpieces, Chinese folk music, and avant-garde contemporary music. They have performed in major world-class music halls, including Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York, and Suntory Hall in Tokyo.
During the one-week show, the series of concerts will present the growth of the classical music genre of string quartets in four stages, from Haydn to Beethoven, to the Romantic period, and finally to contemporary composers from China and the West.
Shanghai Quartet''''s members talked about their connection with the Xinghai Concert Hall, saying, "We were deeply impressed by the excellent acoustics of the Xinghai Concert Hall and the audience''''s attention and recognition of chamber music in Guangzhou."
"Two years ago, we talked about doing something together to promote chamber music when the Xinghai Concert Hall celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2023, and the quartet celebrates its 40th anniversary."
They spent a whole year planning together and finally came up with a four-concert series, multiple music classes, sharing forums and so on, in order to promote chamber music to the Guangzhou audience.
"Such residency of a top-class chamber music group of this scale should be a first in China, and it''''s an innovative attempt by the Xinghai Concert Hall and the Shanghai Quartet," said Wang Dongyun, director of the Xinghai Concert Hall, "But we are confident that the music of the Shanghai Quartet will resonate well with Guangzhou."
