Jukka-Pekka Saraste was born in 1956 in Finland and studied violin and conducting in Sibelius-Akademy. Esa-Pekka Salonen and Jukka-Pekka Saraste co-founded the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra. Jukka-Pekka Saraste was Chief Conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Principal Conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in Edinburgh, Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Saraste served as the Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He collaborated with many top-line orchestras such as Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphonieorchester, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, London Philharmonic Orchestra and Dresden Staatskapelle.

Saraste has a wide repertoire. He has recordings, which include two sets of the complete Sibelius symphonies and a set of the complete Nielsen symphonies, for Virgin Classics, BIS, Ondine, Finlandia, Simax, Decca, etc. He also devoted himself to the promotion of new works and conducted world premieres of Nordic composers such as Kaija Saariaho, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Magnus Lindberg. Jukka-Pekka Saraste was awarded the Finnish State Prize for Music in 2000. He has received a Doctor honoris causa from the University of York, and he is a recipient of Finland’s Sibelius Medal.
